Pieter Hugo is a South Africa-based photographer who is on the up and up. Recent accolades include Pieter’s inclusion in ReGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow, 2005-2025 (an exhibition identifying 50 young photographers who will be considered great by 2025), first prize in the Portraits section of the 2006 World Press Photo competition, and a selection as the Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art 2007, with an exhibition touring South Africa until July 2008. His most recent monograph, The Hyena & Other Men includes some striking photos Pieter took in and around Abuja, Nigeria during the past several years of some locals ‘taming the beasts,’ if you will; it would be an understatement to say that it offers an impressive and candid look into Nigerian culture. I’m not sure how many readers we have in South Africa at this point, but if you’re around and about Cape Town this week, head over to the BIBLIOTEQ bookstore on Kloof St. this Thursday, March 6th at 6 pm to meet Pieter at his launch and signing event. |

Many people these days work without walls as boundaries. Instead of toiling away in a cubicle all day, their laptop is the only consistent element of their personal workspace. One of the only negatives about not working in a cubicle is not being able to decorate it your liking, unless your favorite wi-fi hotspot doesn't mind you hanging up original prints next to the coffee maker. Well, what if you got a sweet wallpaper design for your computer? Would that satisfy your need to decorate? We recommend checking out The Desktop Wallpaper Project at Kitsune Noir. The project is the brainchild of the site's founder Bobby, who thought it would be a great idea to contact his favorite artists and ask them to create wallpapers exclusively for the site that readers can download to their desktop, iPhone or PSP for free. So far sixty artists are involved including Tim Biskup, Mcbess, and IMAKETHINGS. The site will showcase a new wallpaper design every Wednesday until artists stop contributing...hopefully never. We've all heard of people drinking their own urine to survive out in the wild when there is no access to water. Though urine is sterile and (usually) safe to drink, using it as plant fertilizer may be more palatable option to most. The smart folks at EAWAG Aquatic Research in Switzerland have developed a way to extract the phosphorus and nitrogen from urine to be used as fertilizer. Cultivating the nutrients leaves urine harmless to wildlife, otherwise untreated urine reaches the oceans, feeding algae causing algae blooms (also known as Red Tides) which soak up all the oxygen and suffocate fish. An artful take on how to combat this type of pollution, a DIY kit for turning your pee into fertilizer was developed by artists Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray. It will be available during their drinkpeedrinkpeedrinkpee installation opening tomorrow at Eyebeam in New York as part of "Feedback." Drinkpee is an exhibit that explores the role of our bodies and byproducts in larger ecosystems. For more info on how to turn your pee into fertilizer and the upcoming exhibition visit drinkpee and Eyebeam. drinkpeedrinkpeedrinkpee |
